How to Evaluate a Data Partner: Questions Worth AskingComo avaliar um parceiro de dados: perguntas que valem a pena

Before licensing business data, ask about sources, methods, freshness, legal basis, exclusivity and support. A due diligence guide for buyers.Antes de licenciar dados empresariais, pergunte sobre fontes, métodos, atualização, base legal, exclusividade e suporte.

Licensing data from an outside provider can accelerate a business considerably. It can also expose you to stale information, legal risk and wasted effort. The difference usually comes down to the questions you ask before signing. Having been on both sides of these conversations, here is the list I would use.

Where does the data come from?

A credible provider should be able to describe its sources in meaningful terms. Public registries, direct relationships, partner contributions, surveys, licensed third party data and automated collection each have different strengths and risks. Vague answers such as "proprietary sources" with no further detail are a warning sign.

How was it collected and processed?

Ask how records are created, how duplicates are resolved, how errors are corrected and whether humans review the data. Ask about known gaps: sectors, regions or company sizes where coverage is weaker. An honest provider will tell you its limits. One that claims complete coverage of everything is either mistaken or not being straightforward.

How fresh is it?

Ask when records were last verified and how often they are refreshed. Ask whether each record carries a verification date. For fast changing information like roles and contacts, freshness matters more than almost anything else.

What is the legal basis?

If any personal data is involved, ask how the provider complies with applicable law, such as Brazil's LGPD, and on what legal basis the data was collected and may be shared. Ask whether they have a designated data protection officer. Ask what you, as the licensee, are permitted to do with the data and what obligations pass to you.

This is not merely a formality. If a provider's practices are unlawful, the risk can extend to its clients.

What exactly is being licensed?

Clarify the scope. Is the license for internal use only? For a specific project? For a defined period? Can you combine the data with your own? What happens to the data when the license ends? Many disputes arise from assumptions that were never written down.

Is it exclusive?

If exclusivity matters to you, ask directly whether the same data is licensed to others, and get the answer in writing. A provider who keeps clear records of what has been licensed to whom can answer this precisely. One who cannot is likely selling the same thing repeatedly.

Can I test it first?

A small sample or pilot, under appropriate confidentiality terms, lets you evaluate quality against your own knowledge before committing. Check a sample against records you already know well. The error rate you find will tell you a great deal.

What support is included?

Data rarely fits perfectly on arrival. Ask whether the provider will help with integration, answer questions about specific records and correct errors you report. A partner who stays engaged after the sale is worth far more than one who disappears.

What does the relationship look like over time?

Finally, consider the provider as a long term partner, not a one time vendor. Do they understand your business? Are they transparent about pricing and changes? Do they have a reputation for honest dealing in their market? In relationship driven markets like Brazil, references from people you trust are often the most reliable signal.

Our approach

These are the same questions we expect to be asked at IGMEP Data, and we welcome them. Clear answers about sources, methods, legal basis and terms are the foundation of any data partnership worth having. If a provider resists these questions, that resistance is itself an answer.

Licenciar dados de terceiros pode acelerar um negócio ou trazer informação desatualizada e risco jurídico. A diferença está nas perguntas feitas antes de assinar.

As perguntas

De onde vêm os dados? Como foram coletados e processados? Quão atualizados estão? Qual a base legal, especialmente sob a LGPD? O que exatamente está sendo licenciado? É exclusivo? Posso testar antes?
